Role playing over the weekend
Mrs. Hoelscher let Chris know at pick up that a kid had been picking on Ryan and she didn't really stand up for herself. She asked that we work with Ryan over the weekend on role playing in situations where she needs to ask someone to leave her alone or tell the teacher. Chris called me to tell me about it and we were both upset and concerned. We both wanted more details so I emailed Mrs. Hoelscher to ask specifics. It turns out a boy that sits next to Ryan messes with her hair and blows her hair when she is trying to pay attention. Most likely he has a crush on her, but Mrs. Hoelscher wanted Ryan to be able to tell him to leave her alone. We role played many times with me being the annoying boy and Chris being Mrs. Hoelscher. Ryan was very good at asking the boy nicely once, then asking him loudly and sternly the second time if he continued, and finally raising her hand and telling Mrs. Hoelscher that she was being bothered. Hopefully, she can nip this in the bud right away. We really appreciated the heads up from Mrs. Hoelscher. Apparently Ryan is much more tolerant of an annoying boy than she is of her little sister!
