Pseudo Stutter
Last week Ryan suddenly developed a stutter. Out of nowhere. When she was trying to ask a question (especially if the first word started with an "S" or a "W") she would sound like this "w-w-w-w-w-w-w-w-w-w-where is bunny?" or "m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-mommy, hold you?" The first few times we heard it we didn't think too much of it. It wasn't every time she said something, so we thought she was just excited or rushing to tell us something. Her brain was working faster than her mouth. Then, a few days later my parents noticed it and mentioned that she had been doing it throughout the day when they kept her. I started to worry about it. Was she stressed about something? Was someone not letting her talk at school? Was someone mean to her? (Grandpa did some research and there are many causes that can lead to stuttering.) Is she imitating someone who stutters? Or, is she developing a speech impediment? It seemed like it was worse on days after school and was less after a weekend. I worried about it over a weekend and finally got an opportunity to talk to her teachers the following Wednesday. They had not noticed it. Apparently Ryan is pretty quiet at school (shocking!). They did say that she mimics a lot and they believed that she was most likely copying someone who stutters. So, I quit worrying about it and it seems to have stopped. Now, I will find something else silly to worry about.
